Alzheimer's disease (AD), also known as just Alzheimer's, is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that usually starts slowly and gets worse over time. It is the cause of 60% to 70% of cases of dementia. The most common early symptom is difficulty in remembering recent events (short-term memory loss). As the disease advances, symptoms can include problems with language disorientation (including easily getting lost), mood swings, loss of motivation, not managing self care, and behavioral issues. Dementia, and specifically Alzheimer's disease, may be among the most costly diseases for society in Europe and the United States. These costs will probably increase with the ageing of society, becoming an important social problem.
Shanghai Brain Aging Study (SBAS) brings together the strength of several class-A hospitals and research institutions in Shanghai. The doctors from Zhongshan Hospital, Huashan Hospital, Shanghai Mental Health Center, Shanghai East Hospital, etc will form a huge team of volunteers to participate in this study. SCRC will support the study in biobanking, data management, multi-center project management, ethical review and standard development in line with the international standards. s. In addition, SCRC will also provide the office for the Secretariat of the research program for the study.
SCRC has built a “platform of public technology and management for large-scale cohort studies”, characterized by standardized and professional project management, data management and statistical analysis, bio-bank management and laboratory services, all of which are crucial component for the cohort studies. Through this platform, implementation of every step of cohort study can be strictly managed and controlled in a scientific, efficient and standardized way. This can guarantee high-quality research, largely elevate the present technological level of scientific researches and raise to a new level the quality of disease prevention and treatment.
SCRC will actively participate in the Shanghai Brain Aging Study (SBAS), working together with the government, enterprises, scientists to promote the study of AD and other brain diseases.
